Nicosia, Cyprus. Police on Monday continued investigations into ‘Sandy’, examining claims of allegedly questionable money transfers said to have been paid as hush money. The inquiry is based on a collection of text messages between ‘Sandy’ and other individuals.
Allegations and evidence under review
‘Sandy’ has claimed she was raped years ago by former Supreme Court judge Michalakis Christodoulou, allegations brought to light by journalist Makarios Drousiotis. The claims also refer to a supposed clandestine political-judicial cabal.
Claims of wire transfers
Police have reportedly begun looking into alleged wire transfers to determine whether they can be verified and have interviewed a number of people. According to Phileleftheros, detectives are expected to request access to bank accounts.
The reported transfers, including one of €500,000, were purportedly made either to ‘Sandy’, to a company based in Greece, or to both. The amounts were allegedly intended to persuade ‘Sandy’ not to divulge information.
Statements to police
Former president Nicos Anastasiades has provided a statement to police and denied the existence of a so-called ‘Rosicrucian brotherhood’ operating in Cyprus.
Reports also said police interviewed former Akel leader Andros Kyprianou about claims he had proposed Giorgos Savvides for attorney-general as part of alleged backdoor dealings among the political class. Kyprianou is said to have categorically denied the allegations.
Former Supreme Court judge Myron Nikolatos, MP Costis Efstathiou and attorney Polis Polyviou also provided statements to police.
International assistance
Last week, the government said it requested assistance from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
