Cyprus Ports Authority plans €41.5 million expansion of Latchi port capacity beyond 500 vessels

Latchi harbour, Paphos

Latchi, Cyprus. The Cyprus Ports Authority has outlined plans to upgrade and expand the port of Latchi to increase capacity to more than 500 fishing and recreational vessels. The authority has submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment and an ecological assessment to the environmental department.

Environmental review and public consultation

The department of environment has placed the submitted study under public consultation until February 7 to form a comprehensive view before issuing a positive or negative opinion. The ports authority has also formally notified the submission of the environmental study through newspaper announcements.

Project scope, cost and funding

The project consists of a series of individual works with a total estimated cost of €41.5 million, to be financed entirely by the authority’s own funds. The plans involve upgrading and expanding the existing port, which currently accommodates around 350 vessels, including fishing boats, pleasure craft, port police vessels and small cruise ships.

Planned expansion and design features

The main objective is to expand the port basin seaward, towards the north and east, through the construction of new external protection works, including a windward and a leeward breakwater. The expansion would create a new port basin, additional berthing positions and new land areas.

The chosen design focuses on development to the east and north of the existing basin, with backfilling works planned to create new land for future service buildings. The positioning of the new windward breakwater was largely dictated by the presence of archaeological findings at the western end of the existing port.
