EU and regional leaders at a summit in Cyprus on Friday

Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said Cyprus has shown it can influence developments beyond its size after hosting an informal European Council meeting on the island. He said the summit aimed to produce targeted outcomes as leaders discussed regional instability and broader strategic challenges.

President highlights Cyprus role after hosting EU leaders

In a post on X on Saturday, Christodoulides said Cyprus had “once again” shown it can “mobilise, contribute and play a substantial role in shaping developments beyond its size,” citing the hosting of EU leaders at what he described as a critical moment for the Levant and Europe.

He said that “over the last two days, Cyprus has responded,” referring to the summit held on Friday, which brought together European leaders to address regional instability and broader strategic challenges. He added that the meeting was aimed not only at exchanging views but also at advancing “targeted” outcomes.

Christodoulides said he believes “absolutely” in the country’s “potential, its role, its ability to connect regions and perform beyond expectations.” He added that he was proud of what Cyprus had achieved and optimistic about what it could continue to offer.

Government frames summit as bridge between Europe and the Gulf

The government described the summit as part of efforts to position Cyprus as an interlocutor between Europe and the Gulf.

Agenda included security, energy and migration

Discussions among leaders focused on security, energy and migration, as well as the impact of ongoing regional conflicts on European stability.

In earlier remarks, Christodoulides said he hoped such gatherings would be the start of “a more consistent, more results-oriented dialogue” with the goal of “a stronger European Union” alongside “a stronger, more stable region.”

European Council President Antonio Costa, attending the summit, said Cyprus is “a vital anchor of cooperation and European engagement in the region.”
