Cyprus ranks third in EU for quarterly greenhouse gas emissions reduction in Q3 2025

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus recorded the third-largest reduction in seasonally adjusted greenhouse gas emissions among EU member states in the third quarter of 2025, Eurostat said on Friday. Emissions in Cyprus were estimated to have fallen by 5.2% compared with the second quarter.

EU emissions and GDP trends

At EU level, seasonally adjusted greenhouse gas emissions in the third quarter of 2025 were estimated at 828 million tonnes of CO2-equivalents (CO2-eq), a 1.1% increase from the second quarter of 2025, when emissions were estimated at 819 million tonnes of CO2-eq. Over the same period, EU GDP increased by 0.4% compared with the previous quarter.

Sector changes in emissions

The largest increases in greenhouse gas emissions were recorded in households, up 3.6%, and manufacturing, up 1.4%. Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply fell by 0.8%, the only sector to register a decrease.

Year-on-year comparison

Compared with the third quarter of 2024, seasonally adjusted emissions in the EU remained unchanged, while the EU’s seasonally and calendar adjusted GDP increased by 1.6%.

Country-level developments

In the third quarter of 2025, seasonally adjusted greenhouse gas emissions increased in 17 EU countries and decreased in 10 compared with the second quarter. The largest reductions were estimated for Estonia, down 17.4%, Slovenia, down 5.7%, and Cyprus, down 5.2%.

Emissions declines alongside GDP performance

Among the 10 EU countries that registered decreases in greenhouse gas emissions, only Lithuania also recorded a decline in GDP. The other nine countries—Bulgaria, Estonia, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania and Slovenia—reduced emissions while growing or maintaining GDP levels.
