Lakatamia, Cyprus. Authorities say Cyprus is prepared for the 2026 fire season, with new technology, expanded coordination and prevention measures being introduced across the island as concerns grow over increasingly severe wildfire conditions.

Operations centre

The recently opened Unified Fire Service Operations Coordination Centre in Lakatamia is central to this year’s preparations. Equipped with advanced technology and infrastructure, the centre is designed to monitor incidents across the island and mobilise forces quickly to protect life, property and the environment.

Fire Service spokesperson Koulla Mesaritou said the centre will operate for the first time with the aim of improving immediate coordination of emergency incidents and crisis management nationwide. She said it will allow emergency services to monitor incidents in real time and improve communication and decision-making during fast-moving crises.

The centre received €6.5 million in European funding through the EU’s Thalia 2021 to 2027 Cohesion Policy Programme and began operations after its inauguration on April 28.

Monitoring and patrols

Authorities are also introducing new monitoring systems in areas considered particularly vulnerable to wildfires.

Fire detection systems have been installed at strategic points in the Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca districts. They are monitored by local fire stations and centrally through the new operations coordination centre.

Observation posts remain staffed daily during the fire season to detect smoke or fire as early as possible. Mesaritou said patrols are also being carried out using fire engines and drones.
