Cyprus retail trade turnover value index rises 9.8 per cent in May

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ turnover value index of retail trade increased by 9.8 per cent year-on-year in May, according to the state statistical service, Cystat. The turnover volume index of retail trade also rose by 7.5 per cent compared with May 2025.


Value index trends

The largest annual increase in the value index was recorded in automotive fuel, which rose by 20.9 per cent. This was followed by other household equipment, including building materials, carpets, furniture, electrical appliances and lighting, which increased by 12 per cent.

Educational and recreational goods, such as books, stationery, sporting equipment and toys, recorded a value increase of 10.1 per cent.

Volume index trends

In volume terms, the strongest growth in retail turnover was recorded in clothing and footwear, which rose by 19.4 per cent. Information and communication equipment followed with an increase of 17.6 per cent, while other household equipment increased by 13.3 per cent.

A decline of 3.8 per cent was recorded in the retail volume of automotive fuel. The category covering flowers, plants, watches, jewellery, optical goods and second-hand items fell by 2.1 per cent.

January to May period

From January to May 2026, the turnover value index of retail trade increased by 7.1 per cent compared with the corresponding period of 2025. Over the same five-month period, the turnover volume index rose by 5.9 per cent.
