Cyprus road deaths fall below EU average in 2024, Eurostat data show

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus recorded 42 road deaths per million inhabitants in 2024, below the European Union average of 44, Eurostat data released on Monday showed. Across the EU, traffic accidents resulted in 19,934 deaths in 2024, down from 20,384 in 2023.


EU-wide fatalities and longer-term trend

Eurostat reported a 2.2 per cent drop in EU road deaths in 2024 compared with 2023, marking the second consecutive year of improvement. Over the last ten years, road deaths in the EU fell by 17.4 per cent, despite brief rises in 2021 and 2022.

Lowest and highest fatality rates

Sweden recorded the lowest fatality rate at 20 deaths per million inhabitants, followed by Malta at 21 and Denmark at 24. Romania had the highest rate at 78 deaths per million, followed by Bulgaria at 74 and Greece at 64.

Areas with high numbers of accidents

The data indicate that traffic accidents are particularly high in Germany, Italy, and Spain, with some areas seeing tens of thousands of incidents each year.
