Paphos, Cyprus. Fire brigade chief Nikos Longinos said on Wednesday that all competent state services will be on alert throughout the summer to prevent and combat wildfires. He made the remarks during a visit to inspect firefighting aircraft stationed at Paphos airport.
Aircraft deployment and reinforcements
Longinos said a total of 10 firefighting aircraft are currently on the island, with eight based in Paphos, including four helicopters and four aeroplanes. He said two aircraft have been sent from Jordan, while three more are expected to arrive by the end of next week.
He said two of the incoming aircraft will be stationed at the British Akrotiri air force base. Longinos added that the British bases have brought two helicopters and informed authorities that one helicopter is on constant alert and can assist at any time, with the second to be placed on operational alert if needed.
Coordination and readiness measures
Longinos said authorities are in contact with relevant services to be ready to deal with any incident, reduce the likelihood of fires, and respond in a coordinated manner to extinguish them. He said this was the primary reason for his visit to Paphos and that he met with helicopter and aeroplane crews to further increase readiness.
He also said that, with summer approaching and temperatures rising, he visited Larnaca airport last week with forestry department director Savvas Iezekiel.
Engagement with local authorities and volunteers
Longinos said meetings will continue with district governments, volunteer groups and villages, including discussions with mukhtars on measures such as creating firebreaks, clearing grass and checking hydrants. He said services aim to remain on standby every day to deal with incidents.
