Pergamos, Cyprus. Veterinary services on Saturday closed 11 livestock units operating in the buffer zone in Pergamos over concerns about further spreading of foot-and-mouth disease. The pause will remain in effect pending inspections and review of findings.

Closures and inspections

Speaking to CyBC, Agriculture Ministry director general Andreas Gregoriou said operations at the relevant units will remain paused until necessary inspections are carried out and their findings are examined. He said authorities are trying to determine whether the farms comply with relevant legislation.

Farms and milk deliveries

The affected units include eight dairy farms and three sheep farms that previously delivered milk to three dairies in the Republic. The deliveries were carried out under strict surveillance, but the Agriculture Ministry moved to close the units following the recent foot-and-mouth outbreak on the island.
