Cyprus state workforce rises to 55,162 in June 2026

Nicosia, Cyprus. The number of state employees in Cyprus reached 55,162 in June 2026, up 333 people, or 0.6 per cent, from the same month a year earlier, according to figures released by Cystat.

The increase was driven by higher employment in the educational service, while staffing in the civil service and security forces declined.


Service employment

The civil service remained the largest state employment sector, with 23,096 employees in June 2026, down 1.2 per cent from 23,366 a year earlier.

The educational service employed 18,335 people, compared with 17,714 in June 2025, representing an increase of 3.5 per cent.

Security forces employment declined marginally by 0.1 per cent to 13,731 employees, from 13,749 a year earlier.

Employment categories

Permanent employees remained the largest employment category across the state workforce, rising by 0.1 per cent to 32,852 from 32,813 in June 2025.

Employees on contracts of indefinite duration increased by 1.2 per cent to 9,544, compared with 9,431 a year earlier.

The largest increase among the main employment categories was recorded for employees on fixed-term contracts, described by Cystat as contracts of definite duration. Their number rose by 2.9 per cent to 6,007, from 5,835 in June 2025.
