Paphos, Cyprus. Cyprus has intensified efforts to position itself as a cycling tourism destination after the Paphos regional tourism board, Etap Paphos, hosted 12 Polish cycling clubs who explored local routes and signalled plans to return.

Etap Paphos initiative

Etap Paphos said the visit was part of its strategy to strengthen and promote sports tourism, focusing on cycling to extend the visitor season and enhance Cyprus’ international profile.

Routes and areas visited

During their stay, the cyclists rode mainly in the countryside across the Laona region, Akamas, Polis Chrysochous, and the Diarizos and Xeros river areas, receiving extensive exposure to the district’s cycling network.

Assessment of the destination

In a statement, the board said the cyclists experienced routes combining natural beauty, shifting landscapes and high quality surfaces, describing Paphos as suitable for both training camps and leisure cycling tourism, particularly between November and May. The board also said Paphos is ideal for training and recreational cycling tourism during that period.

Feedback on food and hospitality

The Polish cyclists highlighted the area’s gastronomic options, saying they were impressed by local cuisine, traditional products and authentic flavours that complement the sporting experience. The board said exceptionally positive comments were also made about hospitality from tourism professionals and the local community.

Plans to return and broader outlook

Etap Paphos said participants intended to return to Paphos and recommend the destination to other cycling clubs and athletes in Poland, describing the region as an emerging and competitive cycling destination in Europe. The board said it will continue targeted promotional actions and investment in sports tourism to extend the tourist season and strengthen Paphos as a modern, quality and sustainable destination. It added that the visit reflects wider European and global growth in cycling tourism, with demand expanding in volume and diversity.
