Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus is expected to install several hundred megawatts of energy storage capacity by the end of 2027, Energy Minister Michael Damianou said on Wednesday, aiming to increase renewable energy use and strengthen the electricity system.
Speaking at a workshop organised by the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEV) on reducing electricity costs, Damianou said battery storage would support greater solar power integration into the grid and improve system resilience.
Storage projects
The Cyprus Transmission System Operator has signed contracts for battery storage units expected to arrive in Cyprus in January 2027, Damianou said.
He said 120MW of storage capacity owned by the operator is expected to be installed before the summer of 2027.
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus has also progressed with its storage projects, while private developers have secured connection terms for more than 150MW of battery capacity.
Damianou said the planned capacity would allow greater penetration of renewable energy, particularly solar power, into the energy mix and would also support electricity adequacy.
Electricity adequacy
Damianou said the government is examining whether to invoke Article 34 of the Electricity Market Regulation Law, following a request from the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority.
The measure would allow the rapid installation of conventional electricity generation units if needed.
However, he said the matter was being assessed jointly by the Energy Ministry and the regulator, noting that the Transmission System Operator had indicated there should be no electricity adequacy problems during the summer.
Asked whether the measure could be implemented immediately, Damianou said this would be difficult.
