Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus tax inspectors are carrying out round-the-clock checks, with a current focus on coastal businesses experiencing increased seasonal activity.
The nationwide campaign is examining whether businesses issue legal invoices and receipts and accept card payments, Tax Commissioner Sotiris Markides told the Cyprus News Agency.
Focus on coastal areas
Inspections are being conducted across Cyprus, but the Tax Department is placing greater emphasis on businesses in coastal areas serving the tourism and hospitality sectors.
Markides said on-site inspections are carried out at all hours of the day and night, with the current focus reflecting increased seasonal economic activity in coastal areas.
Compliance requirements
The campaign is intended to determine compliance with the legislative framework governing transactions, including the issuance of legal invoices and receipts and the acceptance of card payment methods.
The latest checks follow plans announced in June for a broader summer inspection drive, particularly in tourist areas during July and August.
Further inspections planned
The campaign will not remain limited to coastal areas, with the Tax Department expected to increase inspections and broaden their geographical scope in the coming period.
Markides said authorised officers have been instructed to conduct inspections with discretion, courtesy and professionalism while avoiding disruption to businesses’ daily operations.
He said particular importance is being placed on maintaining the orderly operation of businesses and ensuring that on-site audits do not affect commercial activity.
