Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus will create a national cancer institute after the cabinet approved a bill for its establishment, President Nikos Christodoulides announced on Wednesday.
Cabinet approval and election pledge
Christodoulides said the institute was a commitment he made during the pre-election period and described it as a long-standing request from stakeholders, particularly the federation of Cyprus patients’ associations Osak.
Mandate for coordination and research
He said the institute will coordinate actions, policies, and plans related to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. He added that it will also be responsible for promoting cancer research in Cyprus, stressing the importance of prevention in the sector.
Support from former health minister
Earlier, Energy Minister Michael Damianos, a former health minister, described the plan as a landmark initiative and a crucial step toward upgrading the country’s oncology services. He said last year there was a pressing need for a central, independent body to ensure consistency, continuity, and quality in oncology services, and that the institute would serve that role.
