Nicosia, Cyprus. Renewable energy accounted for 21.5 per cent of Cyprus’ gross final energy consumption in 2025, placing the country 4.7 percentage points below the European Union average of 26.2 per cent, according to Eurostat.
The EU’s renewable energy share rose from 25.2 per cent in 2024, but the bloc remains below its legally binding 2030 target of 42.5 per cent.
EU renewable energy trend
Across the EU, renewables represented 26.2 per cent of gross final energy consumption in 2025. The share has increased steadily from 9.6 per cent in 2004, when records began.
Eurostat said reaching the 42.5 per cent target by 2030 would require an average annual increase of 3.3 percentage points between 2026 and 2030, a faster pace than in recent years.
Highest shares among member states
Sweden recorded the highest renewable energy share among EU member states, at 65.4 per cent of gross final energy consumption. Its renewable sources were primarily solid biomass, hydropower and wind energy.
Finland ranked second with 53.0 per cent, supported mainly by solid biomass, wind and hydropower.
Denmark followed with 48.2 per cent, with renewable energy generated largely from solid biomass, wind and biogas.
