Cyprus urges EU to pursue constructive dialogue with US amid Greenland dispute

Nicosia, Cyprus. Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos called on the European Union to maintain forward-looking cooperation and constructive dialogue with the United States. He said the EU-US partnership should be preserved, particularly during times of uncertainty.

Call for continued EU-US cooperation

Kombos said the longstanding partnership with the United States must be preserved and protected, and that the EU should focus on areas of convergence while shaping a positive agenda and working further on contentious issues.

Greenland developments and support for Denmark

On Greenland, which United States President Donald Trump had demanded be handed over to American control, Kombos said the EU had followed developments with particular concern and acted with sincerity, stability in its fundamental values, respect for its geopolitical potential, and self-confidence. He also expressed full solidarity and support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark.

Raouna highlights EU unity in Brussels

His comments followed remarks by European Affairs Deputy Minister Marilena Raouna at the European general affairs council meeting in Brussels on Monday, where she praised the EU’s unity and resolve in response to Trump’s demands over Greenland. Raouna said the EU acted with unity and resolve, and remains committed to upholding international legality, territorial integrity, sovereignty and integrity.

Dialogue and diplomacy alongside firm principles

Raouna said relations with the US are absolutely indispensable, while adding that the EU sent a clear message of unity and determination in response to the heightening of Trump’s rhetoric last week. She said that while remaining firm on principles, the EU needs to continue on a path of dialogue and diplomacy, and added that Cyprus’ six-month term holding the Council of the EU’s rotating presidency is more pertinent than ever in light of geoeconomic and geopolitical developments.

Christodoulides rejects claim of irreparable damage

President Nikos Christodoulides denied that relations between the EU and the US had been irreparably damaged by Trump’s rhetoric, saying the EU is there to de-escalate, not to escalate. He said the EU is seeking a positive way forward without undermining the territorial integrity or sovereignty of any member state.
