Nicosia, Cyprus. Global shipping remains in “crisis mode” as fighting between the United States and Iran disrupts the Strait of Hormuz, Cyprus Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis said. Separately, rising prices for beach facilities, food, transport and accommodation are increasing the cost of summer outings and holidays for Cypriot families.
Shipping disruption
In an interview with journalist and international author Andrea Busfield for The European, Hadjimanolis said the responsibilities of the shipping industry had expanded beyond the traditional management of vessels.
“When routes become unsafe, ship managers become crisis coordinators,” she said, adding that while public attention focuses on military and geopolitical developments, “the critical work undertaken by the civilian maritime sector often remains less visible”.
Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which normally handles around a fifth of global oil and gas supplies, has been severely disrupted. Continuing instability in the Red Sea has also complicated a principal trade route linking Europe and Asia.
Beach day expenses
A family of four could spend about €120 on a day at an organised beach in Cyprus, according to prices reported by Politis. The estimate includes two sunbeds, one umbrella, a meal and drinks for two adults and two children, two coffees and petrol for a return journey to the coast.
Additional spending on beer, cocktails, snacks or ice creams could raise the total to between €140 and €150.
Following recently approved increases, sunbeds at organised beaches cost €3.50 each and an umbrella costs €3. A third sunbed would increase the charge further.
Holiday accommodation
A quote of €2,500 for four days in Protaras is prompting some Cypriot families to consider destinations outside the island. The August 15 holiday period has reduced room availability and pushed prices higher.
