Cyprus youth online civic participation at 22.2% in 2025, below EU average

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus recorded a 22.2% rate of online political and social participation among young people in 2025, slightly below the European Union average. The figures were released by Eurostat on Friday.

Cyprus and EU figures

Eurostat said just over one in five people aged 16 to 29 in Cyprus engage digitally in civic life, including expressing opinions or taking part in online voting. Across the EU, the corresponding figure was 24.3%, described as “almost one in four young people” using the internet for such activities.

Broader trend in youth engagement

The data pointed to a broader shift towards digital platforms for civic engagement, noting that “young people show higher levels of online political and social participation compared to the general population”. Despite this, Cyprus remained below the EU average, placing it in the middle range among member states.

Highest and lowest participation rates

Slovenia recorded the highest participation level at 49.4%, followed by Latvia at 33.3% and the Netherlands at 31.3%. At the lower end, Belgium reported 12.3% and the Czech Republic 14.3%. Sweden and Greece both recorded 16.1%, placing them among the lowest-performing countries in youth digital engagement.
