Cyta reports reforms as tourism revenue and unemployment decline in Cyprus

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyta’s board of directors has presented its report for the February 2024 to July 2026 term, citing transformation, strategic reforms and investments, as official data showed declines in tourism revenue and unemployment.

Cyta report

The board said its work focused on strengthening Cyta’s position as a reliable connectivity provider while preparing the organisation for a broader role in Cyprus’ digital development.

It said investments in digital transformation, telecommunications infrastructure and technology services had created stronger foundations for improved customer services, additional economic opportunities and Cyprus’ wider digital progress.

The board also identified the expansion of the institutional and legislative framework governing Cyta’s operations as one of the most significant developments during its term.

Tourism revenue

Tourism revenue fell by 4.8 per cent in May 2026 to €355.2 million, compared with €373.3 million in May 2025, according to figures released by the Cyprus Statistical Service on Thursday.

The decline followed a fall in tourist arrivals, attributed largely to regional instability and the war in Iran, which particularly affected visitors from Cyprus’ primary tourist market. Average spending per visitor remained broadly unchanged.

For the January-May 2026 period, tourism revenue was estimated at €798.2 million, down 16.5 per cent from €955.8 million in the corresponding period of 2025.

Unemployment

Cyprus recorded a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3 per cent in June 2026, one of the lowest rates in the European Union, according to Eurostat data published on Thursday.

The rate declined from 3.1 per cent in May 2026 and 3.2 per cent in April 2026.
