Paphos, Cyprus. David Hunter, who was convicted of manslaughter in Cyprus in 2023 for killing his wife, has been admitted to hospital with heart failure and is in critical condition, according to Cyprus Mail sources.

Hospital admission

Cyprus Mail sources said Hunter had been rushed to hospital and was admitted for heart failure. He is reported to be in critical condition.

Conviction and sentence

Hunter, now 78, was found guilty of manslaughter in July 2023. The case related to the death of his wife Janice, 74, whom he suffocated with a pillow at their home in Tremithousa, Paphos, in December 2021.

The court heard that he killed her in a bid to end her suffering while she was suffering from a form of blood cancer.

He was sentenced to two years in prison, but was released on the same day because of time already served.

Appeal and case details

Cyprus’ attorney general appealed both the manslaughter verdict and the sentence handed down to Hunter.

Hunter said his wife had begged him for weeks to take her life. He also said he had tried to take his own life, but was found by police officers after Interpol alerted them. The alert followed a message Hunter had sent to a family member saying he had killed his wife and was about to take his own life.
