Nicosia, Cyprus. Diko leader Nicholas Papadopoulos on Wednesday filed his candidacy for the forthcoming parliamentary elections at the top of his party’s ballot in the Nicosia district.

Candidacy filing and campaign message

Papadopoulos said Diko is presenting “a group of people who are ready to take responsibility” and that the public is asking for “actions, not words” on housing, migration and jobs. He added that Diko “decided to listen to society with a plan and passion”.

Positioning of the party

The 53-year-old, the son of late president Tassos Papadopoulos, said his party “is not a protest party” and that it “must have a strong voice”, though polling suggests it is on course for the worst parliamentary result in its 50-year history.

Call for unity and representation

Papadopoulos said the country needs forces that “unite” rather than “divide”, adding that Diko wants to rebuild its relationship with society to restore what he described as the country’s normality.

Nicosia district seats

A total of 19 of the 56 MPs elected will be from the Nicosia district.
