Zeist, Netherlands. A video showing Dutch police restraining a pregnant Palestinian asylum seeker at a refugee accommodation facility has triggered criticism in the Netherlands and abroad. The woman says the incident caused her to give birth prematurely and led to serious health complications.
Incident at reception center
The confrontation took place at an asylum seeker reception center in Zeist, near Utrecht. Video footage shared on social media shows officers forcing the visibly pregnant woman to the ground and then moving her during the arrest.
Account from the woman
The woman said she approached officers while they were arresting her husband and asked to stay near him. She said she did not act aggressively and that the force used against her was unjustified.
According to her account, her husband had recently been told that his brother had been killed in Gaza. She said the news left him deeply distressed. Reports also said a television set was destroyed inside the facility, which allegedly led to the police intervention.
Police response and review
Dutch police reportedly said officers were called to the center after reports of vandalism and a knife threat.
Those claims have not been independently verified. After the videos were published, Dutch authorities reportedly began an internal review to assess the operation and the level of force used by the officers involved.
Medical claims and reaction
The woman said she went into premature labor after the physical confrontation and continued to receive medical examinations after giving birth. No official medical records have been made public to confirm a direct link between the arrest and the premature birth.
Human rights organizations and social media users have called for a full investigation and greater transparency over the incident.
