Nicosia, Cyprus. The electricity authority (EAC) and the defence ministry on Monday signed an agreement for the installation of 4,400 LED light bulbs in national guard camps across the island. The project is aimed at improving energy efficiency and supporting environmental protection measures without affecting operational readiness.

Energy efficiency and environmental goals

The measure forms part of the EAC’s strategy to improve energy efficiency and meet annual energy-saving targets. It is also part of the defence ministry’s adaptation measures to protect the environment while maintaining operational readiness.

Expected savings and emissions reduction

According to the EAC, the LED bulbs are expected to save more than 60 per cent of energy compared with the existing lighting. The change is also expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in support of a broader green transition.

Implementation timeline and previous phase

The EAC said installation works will begin immediately and are expected to be completed in spring 2027. The agreement is the second part of a joint arrangement between the EAC and the defence ministry, following the replacement of 2,200 energy-intensive lighting fixtures in 2022.
