EAC says Cyprus power stations have two months of fuel stocks amid Middle East conflict

The gas terminal will be built at Vasilikos

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Electricity Authority (EAC) said its fuel stocks are adequate and it does not anticipate supply problems for the moment amid the conflict in the Middle East. EAC spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou said storage tanks at various power stations hold enough fuel for two months.

EAC fuel reserves and deliveries

Papadopoulou told the Cyprus Mail that EAC storage tanks at various power stations have enough fuel for two months. She said suppliers of mazut (heavy fuel oil) and diesel have made provisions for deliveries for the next month.

The EAC expects a scheduled shipment of mazut from Spain on Tuesday. The EAC typically receives fuel shipments every two to three weeks.

Strait of Hormuz contingency planning

With about 20 per cent of global oil consumption passing through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, the EAC was asked whether it has a contingency plan for supplies. The EAC said it does not, but added that the situation is being monitored.

Private-sector importer assurances

Similar assurances were given by private-sector fuel importers. Petrolina executive chairman Dinos Lefkaritis told the Cyprus News Agency there was no cause for concern at the moment, adding the company has stocks lasting 15 days, considered normal for Cypriot standards.
