Nicosia, Cyprus. Veterinary authorities said eight fines totalling €45,000 were issued to livestock farmers for breaching restrictions linked to foot and mouth disease. Six further serious cases were reported to police for investigation.

Inspections and enforcement actions

The veterinary services department said the penalties followed extensive and targeted inspections at farms and areas of heightened animal movements. It said it is consistently and strictly implementing the current framework to protect livestock, ensure animal production and limit the spread of the virus.

Biosecurity and factors in disease spread

The department said human activity is a key factor in the spread of the disease, particularly through the movement and contact of animals, equipment and vehicles. It again called for strict adherence to biosecurity measures to mitigate transmission.

Outbreak impact and control measures

Authorities said the outbreak continues to affect more than 100 livestock units in Nicosia and Larnaca, with large numbers of animals culled as part of control measures. They reiterated concerns about illegal animal movements, warning such actions undermine efforts to contain the disease.

Regulatory framework

Authorities said enforcement of movement restrictions, along with culling, vaccination and monitoring, remains necessary under European Union regulations.
