Elam banner remains displayed near Ledra Palace after protest

Nicosia, Cyprus. A large Elam banner remained displayed above a road outside Ledra Palace on Tuesday, a day after the party held a protest marking the 52nd anniversary of the Turkish invasion.

The banner was suspended near the Ledra Palace crossing point and carried the party’s initials, emblem and the slogan “Cyprus is Greek”.

Questions over permissions

Photographs of the banner were published by Efi Xanthou, a Volt member and former parliamentary election candidate, raising questions about whether its placement complied with regulations and whether required permission had been obtained.

Images showed the banner remained suspended above the roadway outside the Ledra Palace area after the Elam event.

Municipal review

According to Politis, Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos had been informed and said he was examining whether the matter falls under the municipality’s jurisdiction.

Elam held its gathering near the buffer zone on the anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in July 1974.
