Nicosia, Cyprus. Environment Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou urged the public to use carnival products responsibly ahead of celebrations running from February 12 to 22. She warned that misuse of items such as foam sprays, confetti and streamers can create safety, health and cleanliness risks.
Safety and health concerns
Theodosiou said that misuse of carnival products during mass events can pose health and safety hazards. She added that many products contain chemicals that may irritate the eyes, skin and respiratory system, particularly affecting children and people with asthma or allergies.
Environmental impact of lightweight plastics
She raised concerns about the environmental impact of lightweight plastic items, including confetti, streamers and balloons. Theodosiou said these materials are easily dispersed by wind, end up in natural habitats and gradually degrade into microplastics, harming ecosystems and human health.
Waste disposal and local authority measures
The commissioner highlighted the importance of responsible waste disposal, noting that discarded foam, packaging and food or drink waste pollute public spaces. She urged local authorities to install dedicated waste bins during carnival events and ensure proper waste management afterwards, and called on the public to use these facilities and avoid throwing empty containers or materials onto the streets.
Shared responsibility during celebrations
The office appealed for respect for the environment and shared responsibility, underlining that safe and enjoyable celebrations depend on both individual behaviour and effective local organisation.
