Erdogan tells Trump he welcomes extended US-Iran ceasefire, Turkey says

Donald Trump and Recep Tayyip Erdogan meet at the White House in Washington

Ankara, Turkey. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told US President Donald Trump he welcomed the extension of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and said he believed contested issues could be resolved, according to the Turkish presidency.

Call on ceasefire and diplomacy

The Turkish presidency said Erdogan viewed the decision to extend the ceasefire in the region as a positive development and believed a reasonable solution to disputed issues was possible.

Trump earlier said negotiations with Iran were “in the final stages” and warned of further attacks unless Tehran agrees to a peace deal.

Turkey’s regional contacts

NATO member Turkey, which neighbours Iran, has been in close contact with Washington, Tehran, and mediators Pakistan in an effort to end the war, and has passed messages between the sides, the Turkish presidency said.

Syria and Lebanon

The statement said Erdogan described renewed stability in Syria as an “important gain” for the region and urged steps to prevent the situation in Lebanon from worsening amid continued fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

NATO summit and bilateral ties

Erdogan told Trump preparations for the NATO Summit to be held in Ankara in July were continuing, and said Turkey was working for the meeting to be “a success in every aspect,” the presidency said.

The two leaders also discussed bilateral ties, it added.
