Nicosia, Cyprus. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Saturday called for the opening of additional crossing points, saying they are crucial to facilitate the daily life of residents in both communities. He disputed the political framing of the discussion on the issue.
Call for progress on crossing points
Erhurman said that if two leaders cannot produce a solution on an issue he described as simple and beneficial to both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, they cannot be expected to produce a solution on the essence of the Cyprus problem.
Stalled proposals and congestion concerns
He referred to stagnation in talks on additional crossing points proposed in Mia Milia, Louroujina, and the village Pyroi near Athienou. He also cited recurring delays at existing crossing points, highlighting congestion frequently seen at Nicosia’s Ayios Dhometios crossing.
Discussion with UN chief and concerns over politicisation
Erhurman said he discussed crossing points with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a meeting on Wednesday. He stressed that the debate on crossing points should not be used to gain economic, military, or political advantage.
Economic impact and focus on interaction
He said additional crossing points could be an economic disadvantage for the north, as many Turkish Cypriots now shop in the Republic. He added that the priority should be facilitating interaction between the two communities.
