Etek presents roadmap for coordinated upgrade of central Nicosia

Empty: Nicosia's Makarios Avenue

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ Scientific and Technical Chamber, Etek, on Monday presented a new roadmap to upgrade the centre of Nicosia. The chamber described the effort as a matter of national importance and called for a realistic and implementable policy framework for the city centre’s revitalisation.

Implementation framework proposed

Etek said the report aims to establish a policy framework for the substantive revitalisation of the capital’s city centre. It said a central theme of the report is the need to move from planning to the organised and measurable implementation of policies and projects.

The chamber proposed the creation of a delivery office for Nicosia’s urban centre. According to Etek, the office could in future be responsible for monitoring project progress, managing issues and coordinating unified planning measures.

Measures outlined in the report

The report also listed measures including the simplification of permitting procedures for changes of use and minor interventions, financial incentives for renovations, boosting residential occupancy, and promoting cultural and social activities.

Etek said upgrading the centre has direct implications for social cohesion, quality of life, housing and the country’s image.

Call for unified strategy

Etek president Constantinos Constanti said the revitalisation of Nicosia’s urban centre cannot be achieved through isolated projects or piecemeal measures. He said a unified strategy, coordinated implementation and ongoing political oversight are required.

Makarios Avenue selected as pilot site

Makarios Avenue will serve as the first pilot site for the new strategy. Etek said planned measures there include low-cost interventions, shading, lighting and the organisation of events aimed at improving the daily life of residents.
