EU fuel prices rise in April as diesel costs jump sharply

Brussels, Belgium. Fuel prices across the European Union increased in April, with Eurostat reporting higher costs in all member states. The rise followed earlier year-on-year gains recorded in March.


EU-wide annual changes

According to Eurostat, the price of fuels and lubricants for personal transport in the EU rose by 20.8% in April 2026 compared with April 2025, following a 12.9% increase in March on a year-on-year basis.

Up until February 2026, fuel prices had generally been declining across the EU average and in most member states.

Eurostat said 15 member states recorded annual increases above 20% in April.

The highest annual increases were recorded in Luxembourg at 33.8%, France and Sweden both at 29.3%, Latvia at 28.1%, and Bulgaria at 27.8%.

The lowest increases were seen in Hungary at 1.5%, Poland at 8.8%, and Italy at 12.9%.

Diesel and petrol price movements

Eurostat reported that diesel prices across the EU rose by 33.7% in April 2026 compared with a year earlier, while petrol prices increased by 13.6%.

In March, diesel rose by 19.8% and petrol by 9.4% on a year-on-year basis.

On a month-on-month basis, diesel prices increased by 7.9% across the EU between March and April 2026, while petrol prices rose by 2.4%.

In March, diesel had increased by 19.1% and petrol by 10.6% compared with February 2026.
