Fiscal Council president Michalis Persianis announces intention to step down

Michalis Persianis

Nicosia, Cyprus. Fiscal Council president Michalis Persianis announced on Friday that he intends to step down from the role in a Facebook post. He said he has already informed the Finance Minister and the executive branch.

Decision and reasons cited

Persianis said the decision followed discussions with the council’s board members and staff. He stated that the decision was based on personal and practical reasons ahead of the end of his term, adding that “there are no political or other dimensions” behind his departure.

Transition and project planning

He said the practical reasons relate to planning activities and completing important projects within the year, as well as the need for a smooth succession in the council’s presidency. Persianis said he will remain available to the organisation to ensure a proper transition and expressed hope that the council will continue its path toward “institutional maturity” while serving its mission with the same sense of responsibility.

Thanks and acknowledgments

Persianis thanked the executive branch and the Finance Ministry for “excellent cooperation” and for the continuous search for solutions on bilateral matters. He also acknowledged the House Finance Committee for the exchange of views and ideas during his tenure, with particular appreciation for its chair.

Tenure and remarks on staff

Persianis has served as president of the Fiscal Council since 2022, with a six-year term foreseen. He said council members “represent a guarantee” and staff “constitute an asset for the country,” adding that given their quality, his own absence will not be felt.
