Fitiris highlights prevention and preparedness during joint firefighting exercise at Larnaca Salt Lake

Justice Minister Costas Fitiris at the exercise

Larnaca, Cyprus. Justice Minister Costas Fitiris said prevention and preparedness are critical to dealing effectively with fires, speaking on Monday at a joint firefighting exercise at Larnaca Salt Lake.

Exercise scenario and response

The exercise involved the police air operations unit, the fire service and the volunteer group SupportCY. It was based on a scenario in which a fire broke out in reeds and dense dry vegetation, spread rapidly due to strong winds, and threatened nearby residential areas.

Within the scenario, ground and aerial forces were immediately deployed. A helicopter support unit was set up, including the installation of an inflatable water tank and its continuous replenishment.

Use of alternative water sources

During the exercise, a police helicopter carried out water drops after being refuelled on site, demonstrating the use of alternative water sources and the importance of a rapid operational response.

Training, coordination and preparedness

Fitiris said continuous training, proper preparation and realistic simulation of operational scenarios are key pillars in effectively dealing with fires. He said such exercises strengthen coordination among all agencies involved and help ensure the country can respond immediately and effectively to critical situations to protect human lives, the natural environment and property.

He also stressed cooperation between state services, volunteer groups and private entities, saying it significantly enhances operational readiness, particularly ahead of the wildfire season.

Ministry commitment

The justice ministry said it would continue to invest in prevention, training and operational preparedness to strengthen the country’s defences against wildfire risks.
