Beirut, Lebanon. Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Britain said on Monday that a “significant Israeli ground offensive” in Lebanon must be averted, warning it could have devastating humanitarian consequences.

Warning of humanitarian impact

In a joint statement, the countries said a significant Israeli ground offensive “would have devastating humanitarian consequences and could lead to a protracted conflict.” They added that it “must be averted.”

The countries said the humanitarian situation in Lebanon, including ongoing mass displacement, is already “deeply alarming.”

Position on Hezbollah

The statement said the countries support efforts by the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah, which they described as an Iran-backed militant group.
