Foot and mouth disease outbreak in Larnaca totals 38 incidences, officials say

Around 13,500 animals have been culled as a direct result of the outbreak

Larnaca, Cyprus. Veterinary officials said 38 incidences of foot and mouth disease have been detected since the outbreak began in Larnaca last month. About 13,500 animals have been culled as a result.

Incidences and containment zone

Veterinary services department spokeswoman Sotiria Georgiadou said an “incidence” is counted as one farm, as the detection of a positive case at a farming unit requires the slaughter of every animal on the unit. She said the cases recorded so far have been within the infected zone in the Larnaca district.

Testing and ongoing culling

Georgiadou told the Cyprus News Agency that samples from other districts and from elsewhere in Larnaca, including around and inside the 10-kilometre exclusion radius, have not returned positive results. She added that testing is continuing, along with the culling of cattle.

Vaccine supplies and public guidance

The agriculture ministry said it has provided 88,650 doses of vaccine for cattle and 238,400 doses for sheep and goats to private veterinarians so far. The ministry also urged the public and livestock farmers to strictly follow restrictive measures, including bans on the movement of animals and animal feed and restrictions on the movement of people within the exclusion zone.
