John Fredriksen

Washington, United States. Forbes has published its annual list of the world’s 200 wealthiest people, with two Cypriots included. The magazine said wealth rose sharply over the past year as more new billionaires were added.

Cypriots on the list

Forbes said Cypriot citizens John Fredriksen and Vinod Adani are ranked 118 and 121, respectively. Fredriksen is listed with a net worth of €18.2 billion and Adani with €17.91 billion.

Global rankings and new billionaires

Forbes said Tesla CEO Elon Musk tops the ranking with a total net worth of €295 billion. The magazine said the world added 390 new billionaires over the past year, including musicians Beyonce and Dr Dre, and tennis player Roger Federer.

Background on John Fredriksen

Forbes said the Cypriot billionaires have appeared on the list for several years, and that Norwegian-born Fredriksen has ranked as the richest person in Cyprus for several years. A shipping tycoon, he has made most of his money in the oil industry and has owned the world’s largest fleet of oil tankers, as well as a fleet of Cyprus-flagged vessels since 1996.

The 81-year-old was granted Cypriot citizenship in 2006, with local media reporting it was due to dissatisfaction with the Norwegian tax system. His business includes Frontline, described as the world’s fifth largest oil tanker company, which was moved from Bermuda to Limassol in late 2022.
