Former Cyprus Justice Minister Nicos Papaioannou Dies at 79

Larnaca, Cyprus. Former justice minister Nicos Papaioannou died on Tuesday at the age of 79. He held a number of senior public positions before and after serving in government.


Public service career

Born in Larnaca in 1947, Papaioannou served on the board of directors of the ports authority from 1982 to 1988.

In 1989, he was appointed chairman of the town planning council.

Government and later roles

President George Vassiliou appointed Papaioannou justice minister during a cabinet reshuffle in 1990.

He remained in the post until the Vassiliou government was succeeded by the government of Glafcos Clerides following the 1993 presidential election.

After leaving office, Papaioannou served as chairman of the radio and television authority from 2004 to 2010.
