Garcia Harfuch-themed merchandise goes viral in Mexico after raid that killed El Mencho

Mexico's Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar Garcia Harfuch speaks during a press conference, as President Claudia Sheinbaum looks on

Mexico City, Mexico. Mexico’s Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch has become the face of viral merchandise ranging from dolls to blankets and cardboard cutouts following a February 22 raid that killed cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho. The products depict the minister in various styles, including dressed as Batman or shirtless.

Viral products and public image

Garcia Harfuch’s likeness has appeared on party decorations, cushions, towels and miniature dolls known as “Harfuchitos” or little Harfuches. The 44-year-old minister has been described as a heart-throb in Mexico, with his image spreading widely in markets and stores.

Political speculation and early polling

Political and security analysts say Garcia Harfuch is a likely presidential contender in 2030, when President Claudia Sheinbaum’s term ends. Early polling shows him ahead of other prominent political figures, including Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who sought the candidacy in 2023 and is considered likely to try to run again.

Operation against El Mencho and personal stakes

Garcia Harfuch’s popularity grew after the operation that killed El Mencho, head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The security chief helped lead the raid and has blamed El Mencho for a 2020 assassination attempt that left him with three bullet wounds and killed two of his bodyguards.

Commercial demand and response

Garcia Harfuch did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment regarding the popularity of merchandise featuring his image. Carolina Garcia, who sells the merchandise on demand from her home printing business in Tlaxcala state, said orders have come mostly from women as gifts, though she has also received orders from men.
