Germany urges conflict not to spread to Europe, says no plans for military support to Cyprus

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius

Berlin, Germany. Germany has urged all parties not to extend the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to Europe, but is not currently planning to provide military support to Cyprus, government spokesman Stefan Cornelius said on Wednesday.

Warnings against escalation to Europe

Cornelius said the German government is in contact with its partners in Cyprus and shares warnings from other European partners urging those involved, and particularly Iran, not to extend the conflict to European soil.

Monitoring and regional measures

He said Berlin was carefully monitoring the situation and had been kept informed of recent developments, including Monday’s Hezbollah drone attack, adding that a change in circumstances could occur at any time.
Cornelius said adequate measures had been taken within the framework of regional assistance, regional coverage and Nato territory.

Call between leaders

A second German government spokesperson, speaking anonymously, confirmed that President Nikos Christodoulides and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a phone call earlier in the week about the Iran war, but declined to provide further comment.
The spokesperson said the discussion centred on the current situation in the Middle East and that no further details would be disclosed.
