Gesy introduces barcode system for prescription collection at pharmacies

Nicosia, Cyprus. Gesy beneficiaries will be able to use an electronic barcode to collect prescriptions from pharmacies from Friday, removing the need to verbally provide personal details, the health insurance organisation (HIO) said on Tuesday.

How the barcode will work

The barcode will be issued electronically through the system’s beneficiaries portal and can be displayed on a mobile phone, tablet or similar device. Pharmacists will scan the code to access and process prescriptions immediately.

Privacy and administrative changes

The HIO said the measure is intended to address concerns over the sharing of personal data in pharmacy settings, particularly in the presence of other customers. An official statement said the change will allow prescriptions to be filled “without requiring any verbal reporting of personal data”, offering a more discreet alternative for users of the system. Once presented, the barcode will link directly to the patient’s prescription details, reducing administrative steps.

Where to find it and alternative options

The barcode will be accessible under the “available referrals” section of the portal, within the prescriptions category. Existing options will remain in place, and beneficiaries who do not wish to use the barcode will still be able to present their identity card at pharmacies instead of stating their details aloud.
