Goethe-Institut Nicosia to host Sommerkino: Between Waves from July 6 to 10

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Goethe-Institut in Nicosia will open its garden this summer for Sommerkino: Between Waves, screening a selection of films from Germany from July 6 to 10. The series, now in its seventh consecutive year, is dedicated to water.

Series theme and setting

Following the introduction of a theme in the previous edition of Sommerkino, this year’s programme focuses on water. The screenings will take place with lounge chairs, a big screen and the Ledra Palace Hotel as a backdrop.

Opening film

The series opens with 22 Lengths, directed by Mia Maariel Meyer and based on Caroline Wahl’s debut novel of the same title. The film tells the story of two sisters who, despite difficult circumstances, hold on to the quiet beauty of life and to each other.

Second screening

On July 7, the programme continues with Skin Deep by Alex Schaad. The film follows a young couple, played by Mala Emde and Jonas Dassler, who travel to a remote island hoping to resolve their problems in a place where they can literally become another person.

Third screening

On July 8, Beyond the Blue Border will be screened. Directed by Sarah Neumann and adapted from the book by Dorit Linke, the film follows Hanna and Andreas as they attempt to swim 50 kilometres across the Baltic Sea from East to West Germany. It centres on the friendship between three 15-year-olds whose daily lives reflect different responses to the structures of the GDR.

Fourth screening

The series continues on July 9 with Alaska by Max Gleschinski. The film follows Kerstin as she moves through the Mecklenburg Lake District in a red kayak, remaining alone until her journey changes when Alima appears.

Closing film and event details

The screenings conclude on July 10 with Afire by Christian Petzold. The film brings four young people together in a holiday home by the Baltic Sea and tells a story of self-reflection and understanding against the background of the climate crisis.

All screenings begin at 8pm at the Goethe-Institut in Nicosia. Admission is free. Films will be shown in German or the original language with English subtitles. Further information is available at 22-674606 and www.goethe.de/cyprus/sommerkino2026.
