Cairo, Egypt. Greece has received an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to become a founding member of the Board of Peace for Gaza and is reviewing the related documents, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said after a trilateral meeting with Cyprus and Egypt.

Invitation linked to UN Security Council resolution

Gerapetritis said the establishment of the Board of Peace aligns with UN Security Council resolution 2803, which Greece supported as an elected member. He added that Greece supports initiatives that promote peace, security and stability and will coordinate with its partners in the European Union and with other allies, including Egypt.

Trilateral cooperation and shared principles

Gerapetritis said the trilateral cooperation between Greece, Cyprus and Egypt, launched with an initial summit in 2014, has demonstrated strength and resilience and has become a model for similar initiatives in the region. He said its success was supported by shared views on regional and international relations.

He said the three countries reaffirmed their commitment to international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the principles of the UN Charter and UN Security Council decisions. He said the partners prefer diplomacy over war and promote stability, cooperation and understanding, and he described a vision of the Mediterranean as a region of peaceful coexistence.

Regional discussions and focus on Gaza

The meeting addressed developments across the Middle East and North Africa, including Gaza and the West Bank, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, the Horn of Africa, Iran and Libya. On the Palestinian issue, Gerapetritis said the three countries welcomed phase two of the White House’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, which he said was approved by UN Security Council resolution 2803.

He praised Egypt’s efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East and said Palestinian sovereignty was crucial for Gaza’s future, adding that a reformed and strengthened Palestinian Authority could serve as a reliable partner for peace. He said Greece, as a close partner of the Palestinian Authority, intends to play an active role and seek to be present in Gaza’s future.
