Athens, Greece. Greece’s foreign ministry welcomed the appointment of European Commission Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto as the Commission’s special representative for Cyprus, describing it as a sign of the European Union’s commitment to UN-led efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem.
Support for UN-led process
In a post on X on Tuesday, the ministry said the appointment demonstrated the EU’s determination to support initiatives led by the United Nations Secretary-General toward “a just, viable and functional solution”.
Conditions for a settlement
The ministry said any settlement should comply with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the European Union acquis, for the benefit of all Cypriots.
Fitto’s role
The European Commission formally appointed Fitto on Monday to support the UN-led reunification process and work alongside the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar.
