Health Ministry issues heat safety advice as temperatures set to exceed 40C

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Health Ministry on Tuesday urged the public to take extra precautions as temperatures are expected to climb above 40C, warning that extreme heat can pose serious health risks.

Residents were advised to follow official weather forecasts and heatwave warnings and to remain in cool, shaded or air-conditioned places where possible.

Heat protection measures

The ministry recommended avoiding direct sun exposure between 11am and 5pm and postponing strenuous outdoor work or exercise during the hottest part of the day.

People should drink plenty of water even when they do not feel thirsty, avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine, and eat light meals rich in fruit and vegetables.

Loose, light-coloured clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen were also recommended.

Protecting vulnerable people

The ministry stressed the importance of regularly checking on elderly relatives, neighbours and people living alone. Parents were also reminded never to leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.

Heatstroke warning

Heatstroke is a medical emergency, the ministry said. Symptoms include severe headache, dizziness, extreme fatigue, nausea, rapid heartbeat and fainting.

Anyone showing signs of heat illness should be moved to a cool place and given water if conscious. Medical help should be sought by calling 112 if symptoms worsen or heatstroke is suspected.
