Nicosia, Cyprus. Several party leaders in Cyprus received stronger support in their home villages than their parties did nationwide in Sunday’s parliamentary election, with local results showing clear boosts for Direct Democracy Cyprus, Disy, Akel and Elam.

Direct Democracy Cyprus in Meniko

Social media influencer Fidias Panayiotou’s Direct Democracy Cyprus finished sixth nationwide with 5.4 per cent of the vote, but topped the poll in his home village of Meniko in the Nicosia district, west of the capital. The party won 21.2 per cent there, edging out Disy by five votes, while Elam, Akel and Alma placed third, fourth and fifth.

Disy in Troulloi

Disy, which won 27.1 per cent nationwide, recorded a much stronger result in party leader Annita Demetriou’s home village of Troulloi in the Larnaca district. The party took 48.3 per cent of the vote there, just four votes short of triple the total of Elam, which placed second with 16.3 per cent. Diko, Akel and Direct Democracy Cyprus came third, fourth and fifth.

Akel in Yeri

Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou is from Yerolakkos in the Nicosia district, but votes in Yeri, southeast of the capital. In Yeri, Akel took first place with 29.2 per cent of the vote, ahead of Disy on 26 per cent. Elam, Alma and Direct Democracy Cyprus followed in third, fourth and fifth place.

Elam in Politiko

Elam recorded a landslide in party leader Christos Christou’s home village of Politiko in the Nicosia district, taking 40.9 per cent of the vote and more than doubling Disy’s total in second place. Akel, Diko and Alma finished third, fourth and fifth.

Diko in Engomi

Diko was the highest-ranking nationwide party whose leader did not win at home. The party only slightly outperformed its national total in Engomi, the Nicosia suburb where party leader Nicholas Papadopoulos lives.
