Nicosia, Cyprus. State health services Okypy have launched an investigation into complaints concerning the treatment of a four-year-old boy who suffered brain damage while being treated for meningitis.
The child remains under treatment at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia.
Health services response
Okypy spokesman Charalambos Charilaou said the organisation had taken the family’s complaints into account and had already begun an investigation into the circumstances of the case.
He said Okypy expressed sympathy for the family and assured that all reports were examined responsibly and objectively.
Timeline of treatment
According to Reporter, the boy developed a fever on July 8. His parents were in contact with his paediatrician over the following days, during which medication and tests were prescribed.
After his condition did not improve, he was taken to Limassol General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with meningitis.
The parents later insisted that he be transferred to Makarios Hospital in Nicosia as his health continued not to improve.

The boy appears to have become brain dead on July 14 while being transferred to Makarios Hospital, according to the report.
