Iran attack shakes Dubai as debris hits key sites and residents weigh leaving

Burj Al Arab in Dubai after an Iranian attack

Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Residents in Dubai described fear and disbelief after Iran fired drones and missiles at Gulf States in retaliation for US and Israeli strikes, with debris causing damage at prominent sites despite most projectiles being intercepted.

Residents react as explosions and interceptions light up the sky

Some people in Dubai ran for cover while others watched from windows as missiles and interceptors streaked overhead.

Influencer Hofit Golan recorded smoke rising from an explosion on the Palm Jumeirah and told her followers: “Oh my god … this is the view from my balcony,” adding, “This is in front of my home. Oh my god.”

Damage reported at major landmarks

The debris caused damage at some of Dubai’s best-known locations, including the Burj Al Arab hotel and the Palm Jumeirah, which is home to luxury hotels and high-end apartments.

Residents described being jolted by blasts during the attack.

Expat community reassesses perceptions of safety

For decades, many residents have viewed Dubai as a safe haven from regional conflict, including Arabs who fled wars elsewhere and Westerners drawn by low taxes and an orderly lifestyle. That view was shaken by the attack.

Daniel Holmes, a trader based in Dubai with a large Instagram following, said he was woken by a missile interception and saw it from his balcony. In a social-media post, he said locals told him there was nothing to worry about, but he described “genuine war around where you live here in Dubai.”

Some consider leaving as others stress continuity

Across the city, some residents discussed leaving temporarily, while others said Dubai and the UAE could still ensure security and continuity.

Expatriates make up around 90% of the UAE’s population.
