Israeli strikes in Gaza kill at least six, including Al Jazeera correspondent

Gaza (1)

Gaza City, Palestinian Territories. Israeli strikes in Gaza killed at least six people, according to Palestinian health officials and rescuers cited by the BBC. Among those reported killed was Al Jazeera correspondent Ahmed Wishah.

Strike in Bureij refugee camp

Al Jazeera said Wishah was killed in what it called a flagrant violation of international law. The Israeli Defence Forces described Wishah as a Hamas terrorist who served as a sniper operative.

The IDF said Wishah had in recent months advanced sniper attack plans against Israeli troops, but did not provide evidence. According to a local hospital and the Hamas-run civil defence agency, which conducts rescue operations, two other people were killed with Wishah in the strike on a home in Bureij refugee camp.

The IDF also accused the two other people killed in the strike of being part of Hamas.

Casualties since ceasefire

Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, whose figures the UN regards as reliable, said the Israeli military has killed 1,007 people since a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect last October.

Strike in Gaza City

In the Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City, four family members were killed in an overnight strike on a home, according to the civil defence, relatives and a nearby hospital.

Shifa Hospital said it had received the bodies of the family, including two children.

Previous killing of Wishah’s brother

Wishah’s brother Mohamed, who was also a correspondent for Al Jazeera, was killed in an Israeli strike in April. The IDF accused him of working in Hamas rocket and weapons production headquarters, without providing further details.

Relative’s response

“Is this really a ceasefire?” a cousin of the children, Mohammad Safadi, asked the AP. “We are civilians. I never held a weapon.”
