Rome, Italy. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Italy is planning to send air defence assistance to Gulf countries in response to Iranian air strikes. She said the move is aimed in part at protecting Italians and Italian troops in the region.

Meloni outlines planned assistance

Meloni told radio station RTL 102.5 on Thursday that Italy intends to send assistance to Gulf countries, “specifically in the field of defence and in particular air defence.” She said the approach is in line with the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

Reasons cited for the decision

Meloni said the plan reflects not only friendly ties with Gulf nations but also the presence of tens of thousands of Italians in the region and about 2,000 Italian troops deployed there. She said they are people Italy “want, and must, protect.”

How do you think Italy’s planned air defence assistance could affect security for Italians living and serving in the Gulf region?
