Italy to deploy frigate Federico Martinengo near Cyprus in coordinated European naval presence

Italian naval frigate Federico Martinengo

Nicosia, Cyprus. Italy will deploy the naval frigate Federico Martinengo to waters near Cyprus as part of a coordinated European naval presence aimed at reinforcing the island’s security amid escalating tensions linked to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Italian deployment and personnel

Italian officials confirmed on Friday that the Federico Martinengo will deploy with at least 160 members of the Italian navy as part of a joint security presence alongside forces from Spain, France and the Netherlands. Italian authorities said the number of personnel could vary depending on operational requirements and the final configuration of the vessel participating in the mission.

Mission context and recent incidents

According to the Italian defence ministry, the mission is part of a broader European response following security incidents near Cyprus earlier this week, including a drone strike targeting the British military base at Akrotiri. The deployments follow the drone strike on the British sovereign base area at Akrotiri, which prompted a wider security response by European partners seeking to reinforce the island’s defensive perimeter.

Capabilities of Federico Martinengo

The Federico Martinengo is a modern warship designed for operations including maritime security, surveillance and defensive operations against aerial threats.

Previous operations in the Red Sea

Last year, the vessel completed a deployment in the Red Sea as part of the EU naval mission Aspides, where it was tasked with protecting commercial shipping from attacks by Houthi forces before returning to the Taranto naval base in southern Italy.

Wider European naval deployments

Italy’s move comes as several European naval forces position ships in the eastern Mediterranean in response to the deteriorating regional security environment. Spain has confirmed it will deploy the naval air defence frigate Cristobal Colon to the region, while the French vessel Languedoc and Greek warships Kimon and Psara are already operating near Cyprus with radar and missile defence capabilities designed to detect and intercept drones and other airborne threats.

Stated purpose

European governments have framed the naval deployments as a precautionary measure intended to strengthen regional stability and support Cyprus as tensions across the Middle East continue to intensify.
